Thanksgiving eating
Great dinner, though it was only me and the kids, with Margaret in Ohio.
Brined the 9 lb turkey overnight in mixture of salt water & brown sugar. Herbs (thyme, sage, rosemary). Couple of lemons and oranges, quartered & squeeze. Then this morning patted it dry, chopped up different oranges & lemons, a red onion, and some dried peppers. Then rubbed it outside with a spice rub. Cooked for the first hour breast-side down, then turned over. It was really flavorable, not dry, and even the beast tasted good. One of the better turkeys I've ever made.
Had a mash with a mixture of potatoe, butternut squash, carrot, parsnip, turnip & garlic, all mashed in low fat sour cream and no fat chicken broth. Genevieve and I made a brussels sprouts dish with some scallions, garlic, and walnuts. Dressing with lots of onions, green pepper and celery diced in some Foccacia croutons I got from Williams Sonoma (seasoned really nicely), made with nonfat chicken broth. And a good gravy with chicken broth I made from the neck and inner organs of the foul. Rounded out with canned yams, canned cranberry sauce (I didn't get it together to make anything with the berries I bought, maybe I'll do that over the weekend), rolls.
Really a good dinner; I ate probably too much. There was real butter in the gravy and brussels sprouts, the dressing had a lot of bread in it (no butter there, only broth). I had one piece of pumpkin pie, too. So I probably didn't put on too much from it, especially since I took an hour bike ride and a half-hour walk this morning.
After dinner we went and saw the Harry Potter movie. Enjoyed it quite a bit, it told the story of the book very well (though I didn't see an explanation in the movie for the car saving the day when they were with the spiders). But I don't think much of that Landmark theatre in Berkeley.
