Why Do Employers Pay for Health Insurance, Anyhow?.
Nobody expects employers to provide groceries, housing or clothing, but
for odd historical reasons American employers have evolved into
providers of health insurance. By Daniel Akst. [New York Times: Health]
Yeah, why? Isn't this by definition
another tax on businesses of all kinds, and isn't it especially onerous
for small businesses who can't get the ecnomies of scale? How could it
possibly be worse if it were socialized?

An Early Eval Of Apple's Mac OS X 10.3.
Will Panther tempt Linux users? Sure! But I don't think there will be
widespread defections, given the price points of the Apple hardware
required to run it. By Chris Gulker (NewsForge via MyAppleMenu) [MyAppleMenu]
Mac's aren't as expensive as they
used to be, though. I'm running Panther on a 400mHz iMac that is
several years old, and it works fine. The only thing you need to do is
make sure it has sufficent RAM (I upgraded to 512 Megs). You can find
Macs of this class pretty reasonably no on eBay and in used computer
stores.
