Mick LaSalle gets it just about right in his review of Little Children. The movie was very affecting, and even though yesterday was a very intense day for me, as I watched my friend die, images and themes from this movie kept popping into my head. It's flawed -- the narration, in particular is uneven and even though it might have been jarring by intention, it was still jarring and dissociative in spots -- it was a very affecting movie. Jackie Earle Haley's performance, in particular is one I won't soon forget.

Something about Michael Gray's fine Bob Dylan Encyclopedia really rubbed Al Kooper the wrong way, and he reacted with a whole lot of vituperation, not a lot of which actually deals with stuff Gray wrote, as opposed to what Kooper says he wrote. If you're interested, you probably already know about this stuff, but in case you don't know about it, you can read Gray's reasoned response here. There are lots of good music links on Gray's blog, and lots of good postings. He's been writing about Bob for 35 years now, with mixed results (I had some quarrels with the last edition of Song and Dance Man, not with the facts, but with the presentation sometimes, which seemed a bit padded). (Note, somehow the next sentences got truncated from my original post.) That said, the book was very enjoyable, insightful, and provocative, and if you have the interest to go that deep into reading about Bob, Gray is a good place to start. There have been times -- happily this is not one of them! -- when reading about Bob was more fun that listening to his current output.
