SOF review of 6.8mm Barrett M468 [Airborne Combat Engineer]
A very interesting review of a new rifle from Barrett (best known for .50 BMG rifles) and the cartridge it uses, which was developed by some very good shooters in the Army. There are a couple of interesting points that the article doesn't really stress.
First, although Barrett's advertising slogan on their photo of the rifle says, "Bigger, Better, and Always Leading the Way," the rifle only weighs 7.3 pounds! I consider "bigger" to be quite undesirable in a rifle--not just because I'm too weak to use a heavy rifle, but because every pound your rifle weighs is one pound less ammo you can carry.
The other interesting thing, pointed out by Frank Sauer on the smith2004-discuss mailing list, is that the 6.8mm SPC cartridge is ballistically almost identical to the .276 Pedersen, the cartridge the M1 Garand was originally developed for.
I won't be able to buy one of these new rifles in California, but hopefully I'll have a chance to try one out sometime.
