It turns out that the Thinkpads' lack of Firewire doesn't rule them out as PowerBook replacements after all. On closer inspection, it turns out that both of the Firewire devices I own (a 200GB hard drive and an Epson photo printer) support USB 2 as well as Firewire.

There's an interesting mention of a Newton emulator which would allow the Newton OS to run on new hardware. It would be great if that project were successful!
