"Two nerds arguing about the best way to connect a Web service to a relational database management system is equally stupid. Web/db connectivity was a sort of interesting problem in 1994 when everyone was using CGI (see the database interfacing chapter of Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing). It became a completely uninteresting problem after it was solved in 1995 by AOLserver (then called NaviServer), whose connection pooling scheme and interpreted language API improved performance by roughly a factor of 100 over CGI. The irrelevance of even this level of performance gain is illustrated amply by the fact that Amazon.com ignored the connection innovations, continued to use CGI, and cried all the way to a $25 billion market capitalization.", Philip Greenspun

Some quotes from Business 2.0 Dec 2001:

"Marketing and sales people know how to take an unstructured problem and crete something sellable out of that", Randy Haykin, iMinds Ventures, SF

"Learning to listen is how I made the leap from engineer to executive".." If you take all the great business leaders and ask them what their strong suit is, none of them will say technology know how", Jeff Katz, CEO Orbitz (has BS in Mech Engineering)

Becoming a strong corporate leader depends on your ability to learn fast.

"This environment is forcing you to be more daring.  Intel hates Sun and would never user our stuff.  So I went to the companies that Intel was acquiring - those companies didn't hate Sun - and I sold them a lot of equipment", Shannon Bradley, sales exec at Sun Microsystems

"Never give up in trying to reach a prospect.  That's the best lesson that I've learned in my sales career"... "The best way is to look them in the face, engage their eyes, and convey a message of sincerity.  Words have nothing to do with it.", Phil Conway, managing director JPMorgan Private Bank.
