Interesting piece in the New York Times on the latest in telematics in Japan.  The computer mouse built into the steering wheel sounds useful.

From Nissan: "Embedded in the steering wheel is a thumb-operated computer mouse, which gives access to traffic, weather and safety reports from the Web and also lets the driver download videos, e-mail and music. Assuming you're not driving, you can see all that on a liquid-crystal-display screen on the dashboard. If the car is moving, you can use spoken commands to have your e-mail read to you."  -- Al

Click here for a demo of the Mercedes Motorola V60 phone vehicle integration.  There is a link to an interactive demo on the page. This phone is available on all 2002 models.  This one is cradle/dock based.  I assume they're looking to blue tooth for the future.

I've got an email invite out to the President and CEO of DaimerChrysler Research and Technology North America lab in Palo Alto.   Our telematics consultant friend called him up on Friday and mentioned our interest.  The CEO returns to the office on Monday, but perhaps he'll catch his email today.   I'll follow up on phone on Monday.   Fingers crossed!!  -- Al
