Patriot Act not just for terror
The Bush administration, which calls the USA Patriot Act perhaps its most essential tool in fighting terrorists, has begun using the law with increasing frequency in many criminal investigations that have little or no connection to terrorism.

The government is using its expanded authority under the far-reaching law to investigate suspected drug traffickers, white-collar criminals, blackmailers, child pornographers, money launderers, spies and even corrupt foreign leaders, federal officials said.

Justice Department officials say they are simply using all the tools now available to them to pursue criminals - terrorists or otherwise. But critics of the administration's antiterrorism tactics assert that such use of the law is evidence the administration has sold the American public a false bill of goods, using terrorism as a guise to pursue a broader law enforcement agenda.

Justice Department officials point out that they have employed their newfound powers in many instances against suspected terrorists. With the new law breaking down the wall between intelligence and criminal investigations, the Justice Department in February was able to bring terrorism-related charges against a Florida professor, for example, and it has used its expanded surveillance powers to move against several suspected terrorist cells.

But a new Justice Department report, given to members of Congress this month, also cites more than a dozen cases that are not directly related to terrorism. In them, federal authorities have used their expanded power to investigate individuals, initiate wiretaps and other surveillance, or seize millions in tainted assets....more [Tacoma News Tribune]

Are we surprised? DUH! Of course they were going to use them to expand law enforcement. This was the main reason to oppose these changes in the laws. We have John Ashcroft leading the way, and we are surprised when the law gets used for more then the original intent? The is typical of the lies, and deceit we gotten from this adminsitration...mj

I Like Clark!
I have been left lukewarm so far with the Democrats running against Bush. I like Dean's politics, but not his chances in a general election. Kerry strikes me as another Dukakis, just not vibrant enough, though his war hero status would help. Lieberman is to much of the past, and though I would love to see a Jew in the White House, I am not sure if the country will do it (that's a sad observation).

At this point though I am very impressed with Wesley Clark and his entry into the race. His comments about Iraq are hard to dispute with his background. It's also nice to see a rich former Investment Banker admit he didn't need the tax cuts that Bush passed along.

He can also look Bush in the eye and say "I served in Vietnam, while you where AWOL from your unit of the Texas Air National Guard!" WHat I wouldn't giove to hear that exchange...mj
