Multi Boot Powerbook
Wolf Rentzsch has the same problem as I: his powerbook needs to run 4 different versions of the OS

Well, OK, I'm not that bad. But I still need to run 4 different OSes off my poor old Powerbook.

  1. The current version of the OS. This is where i work most of the time.
  2. 10.3.9, so I can have 10.3 support in my applications. (It's far better to build 10.3 apps on an actual version of 10.3.)
  3. Yellow Dog Linux, so I can play/learn in that world.
  4. OS 9. (I actually don't have an OS 9 setup I can use - I'm out of space on my drive. But sometimes I need to test software on an actual version of OS 9. Yes, some of my projects are still in OS 9, but we're working on it. And sometimes I still have to write an AppleScript that supports OS 9.)

Like Wolf, I keep a lot of my files on an external firewire drive - my music, my photos, backups.

Unfortunately, I have a much smaller drive - a 60GB. My home folder takes up 6.5GB, a good chunk of the 20GB partition I have for (the current version of the OS). Add all of the other stuff (/Developer, /Applications), and you'll see that it's a little cramped in here.

I really hope to string this Powerbook out until March 2006, I'll have had it for 5 years. (I'll of course keep it around longer, but it'll be a QA Machine, and not a Main Development Machine. 'Cause I'll need to run Classic stuff sometimes too.)

5 year+ active lifespan. Try that with your average PC laptop.
