In announcing and defending the Microsoft sellout, Ashcroft, who is carrying out President Bush's policy, has used high-sounding policy principles as his motive even though there plainly were political reasons as well. For them to now discover the virtues of antitrust would look like a totally political move with overtones of retribution -- hardly the first time from this crowd, of course. But no one should believe they've suddenly discovered that it's a good idea to have a serious competition policy for the technology industry. [Dan Gillmor's eJournal]
