DIY Wireless Networking

GIANT DISCLAIMER: I know (virtually) nothing about wireless networks. I just bought an Airport basestation and card on eBay and am breathlessly awaiting their arrival via UPS.

Still... how cool is this?! Apparently you can make a pretty darn good directional antenna for the price of a can of stew (or tomatoes, for the non-meat-eaters among us) and a handful of nuts and bolts.

Of course technology can always be used for good or evil. BBCi has an article about folks trolling the streets of London for unsecured 802.11b wireless networks. On the upside, others are using the same technology to share cheap internet access.

A Strange Kind of Sensuality

Sometimes I run my mouse up and down the Dock pinned to the left side of my monitor, just for the pleasure of watching the 25 or so icons swell and subside.

It's a lot like stroking a cat's back, and enjoying the sensation as she arches up against your hand. Except there's no purring.

To remedy that, you could install Cat-in-the-Dock, but the Cat does a lot more disruptive stuff than just purr. (It is, however, the only piece of software to-date that has made me laugh out loud immediately upon installation.)
