It seems that I've been getting a few search hits on my CSS Kool-Aid for Newbies article, so I'll link to it and put it out there. For some reason my stories aren't showing on the main page.
It also seems like there have been a few people coming here searching for journalism resources, probably because of my article, What Is Ham Journalism? I wrote the article when I first started looking at the J-School at the University of Minnesota, but I decided not to persue a Journalism degree.
Long story short, the class is boring as hell, and for some reason they require Journalism majors to take the class. I think it's one of those "filter" classes, but I think the class might be discouraging a few people from getting into the program. It sure as hell put me off from the program.
Right now, we're studying public relations, and next week we're looking at advertising. Both of these subjects are pure hell to me, and yet some people in the class are totally gung-ho about it. I admire them for their zeal and passion for their studies. I wish I could be that blindly eager to learn something so entirely bland and boring. I worked at an ad agency for over two years. I'll never work in one ever again.
If I really didn't care about computer science, I could go into the J-School head-first, armed with Gonzo Marketing and the Cluetrain Manifesto, and set the school on it's ear. But I'm not interested in wasting my money. It's a shame, too, but its not for me. Maybe if I had more time, too.
