Just finished reading "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" by Edmund Morris. It was a good read, entertaining, informative and obviously written by a person who was familiar with his subject and liked him also.
In the chapter on Roosevelt's tenure on the Civil Service Commission he talks about Speaker Reed who issues one of the ultimate put-downs when speaking of two House colleagues, "They never open their mouths without subtracting from the sum of human knowledge." I can think of a few people in the present Washington administration to whom this could be aptly said about.
