1.5 million Italians Protest U.S. Attack of Iraq

Common Dreams -- ROME:  More than 1.5 million Italians took to the streets of dozens of cities Saturday afternoon and evening to protest possible U.S. military action against Iraq -- a surprise show of discord that could be fervent enough for the Italian government to re-think its support of Washington. The larger-than-expected protests took place without violence, despite speculation from some fronts that the gatherings could become dangerous, especially to U.S. citizens. On Friday, the U.S. Embassy in Rome circulated a warning to citizens residing in or visiting Italy to stay away from the demonstrations because of fears that they could become targets for violence. But even though the protests were peaceful, demonstrators made it clear that they opposed U.S. action against Baghdad. The stance is significant because up to this point, Rome and London have been President George W. Bush's strongest allies in Europe. Most European leaders -- most vocally France's Jacques Chirac and Gerhard Schroeder of Germany -- have called on diplomatic means to diffuse tensions between the United States and Iraq. "For several weeks, Italians have been saying that they are opposed to action against Iraq, but this is the first time they have put those words into action," Maria Rossi, co-director of the polling firm Opinioni, told United Press International. "The site of thousands of Italians on the streets protesting against the potential war in Iraq has to be a sobering sight for government officials who will need public support for other issues." Three Guns found Innocent

We all know that guns don't kill people. Guns are innocent. -- New Orleans News -- A 20-year-old New Orleans man has survived being shot 25 times last weekend by an assailant who is still on the loose, New Orleans police said. The victim, whose name was not released by police, was walking in the 2400 block of North Villere Street on Saturday just before 3 a.m. when the attacker walked up to him and began firing a handgun, police said.  "Once that weapon emptied, he produced a second weapon and continued to fire," police said. "When the second weapon emptied, he produced yet a third and continued to fire."  "Preliminary investigation indicates the (shooting) motive may stem from some type of argument," New Orleans police spokesman Sgt. Paul Accardo said.  The victim remains hospitalized at Charity Hospital in New Orleans after being shot in the left arm, left leg and numerous times in "the stomach area," Accardo said.  "It's unusual to see someone shot this many times and survive it," he said. "The victim really is lucky. Someone maybe higher than us was apparently looking out for him." -- I am sure it was the God of Guns. (10/07/02)

Russian's Pravda Reports ET on the Moon

It this why we haven't been to the moon since 1972? -- Pravda -- “NASA scientists and engineers participating in exploration of Mars and the Moon reported the results of their discoveries at a briefing at the Washington National Press Club on March 21, 1996. It was announced for the first time that man-made structures and objects have been discovered on the Moon.” The scientists spoke rather cautiously and evasively about these objects, with the exception of an UFO. They always mentioned that the man-made objects are possible, and stated the information was still under study and official results will be published later. It was mentioned at the briefing as well that the Soviet Union used to own some photo materials proving the presence of such activity on the Moon. And, although it wasn’t identified what kind of activity it was, thousands of photo- and video materials from the Apollos and the Clementine space station showed many parts on the lunar surface where this activity and its traces were perfectly evident. The video films and photos made by US astronauts during the Apollo program were demonstrated at the briefing. People were extremely surprised why the materials hadn’t been presented to the public earlier. NASA specialists answered: “It was difficult to forecast the reaction of people to information that some creatures had been or still are on the Moon. In addition, there were some other reasons to it, which were beyond the control of NASA.” ... Investigators are especially interested in ancient structures resembling partially destroyed cities. Photos reveal an astonishingly regular geometry of square and rectangular constructions. They resemble our cities seen from the height of 5-8 kilometers. A mission control specialist commented on the pictures: “Our guys observed ruins of the Lunar cities, transparent pyramids, domes, and God knows what else, which are currently hidden deep inside the NASA safes, and felt like Robinson Crusoe when he suddenly came across prints of bare feet on the sand of the desert island.” What do geologists and scientists say after studying the pictures of lunar cities and other anomalous objects? They say that such objects can’t be natural formations. “We should admit they are artificial, especially the domes and pyramids.” Reasonable activity of an alien civilization showed up unexpectedly close to us. We were not ready for it psychologically, and some people hardly believe they are true even now.  (10/07/02)

Beyond Crime and Punishment

Timothy Wilken, MD writes: In our present world, it is widely believed that mistakes are the result of badness. So when mistakes occur, we investigate, blame and punish. This belief has resulted in a world where violence, hate and judgment are common. Synergic science reveals that mistakes are in fact the result of ignorance. If we understand this, then when a mistake occurs, we would analyze, determine responsibility, and educate. This could soon lead to a world where public safety, love and compassion are common. ... Our human science has revealed that our knowing is incomplete and imperfect. This means that every human belief is an assumption. We can never know for sure. We can never know ALL. As you sit in your chair reading these words, you assumed the chair would hold you. You did not check under the chair to see if it had broken since its last use. When you ate lunch at your favorite restaurant last week, you assumed the waitress had washed her hands. You assumed the cook did not have hepatitis. If you had assumed otherwise, you would not have walked into that restaurant. You would not have eaten your lunch. We humans assume. Herein lies our uncertainty — that’s all we humans can do. There is nothing wrong in our assuming, we are simply obeying a fundamental ‘law’ of Nature.  (10/06/02)

Terrorists Attack Yemen Oil Tanker

BBC News -- The owners of a French oil tanker on fire off the coast of Yemen say they believe it was rammed by a smaller boat, before exploding into flames. ... Captain Peter Raes, managing director of France Ship, told BBC News Online it would be "near impossible" for an accidental explosion to have taken place, and that explosives were likely to have been on board the vessel which crashed. The USS Cole attack was blamed on al-Qaeda. An attack on the American warship the USS Cole near in the Yemeni port of Aden two years ago killed 17 US servicemen. Captain Raes said that attack, which was blamed on al-Qaeda, was his "only point of reference" and that he had never seen any other similar incidents of vessels exploding. (10/06/02)

To a Free World

Condoleezza Rice speaks: As the president says in the cover letter: we seek to create the "conditions in which all nations and all societies can choose for themselves the rewards and challenges of political and economic liberty." This strategy has three pillars: 1) We will defend the peace by opposing and preventing violence by terrorists and outlaw regimes. 2) We will preserve the peace by fostering an era of good relations among the world's great powers. 3) And we will extend the peace by seeking to extend the benefits of freedom and prosperity across the globe. DEFENDING our nation from its enemies is the first and fundamental commitment of the federal government. And as the world's most powerful nation, the United States has a special responsibility to help make the world more secure. (10/06/02)

The Dying Oaks of California

New York Times -- The forests and woodlands of America conceal a landscape of loss. The great elms and chestnuts are missing, lost in blights of the past. Hemlocks in the Northeast are under threat from the woolly adelgid, and environmental pressures are affecting other species as well. But the most volatile and in some ways most frightening scourge of trees at the moment is Sudden Oak Death, which has killed tens of thousands of oaks in coastal California in just a few years. The cause is a tiny organism called Phytophthora ramorum, which is related to other Phytophthora species that have caused agricultural plagues. The pathogen spreads in ordinary water, and affected trees, particularly coast live oaks, California black oaks and a related species called tanbark oak, appear to ooze a gelatinous blood-like sap from their trunks before dying altogether. No one yet knows how many kinds of plants the newly identified pathogen may harm. The list, so far, includes some 17 different species, including Douglas fir and redwood. Sudden Oak Death first appeared in California in the mid-1990's. What makes it so worrisome, besides the killing it is doing in the coastal woodlands, is the fact that it may spread to trees with a far wider habitat, like northern red oak and pin oak, which occur throughout the Midwest and southern Appalachians. The potential economic damage is enormous, including the loss of timber stands and a stranglehold on the movement of nursery plants in order to prevent the disease from spreading. Even now, California is facing significant agricultural quarantines. No one yet knows where Phytophthora ramorum came from or how this cycle of tree sickness began. (10/06/02)
