Timothy Wilken, MD and Arthur Noll --a dialogue: Unfortunately, most of those living in the first world have no idea that we are facing an enormous energy crunch. Our current governments and leaders don't want them to know. There are lots of other groups focused on the problems of the fossil fuel depletion crisis. We want to focus only on solutions. Also those seeking to run away and escape Mother Nature's reckoning as we are forced to acknowledge the finiteness of this planet, are of little help. We don't want to run away. We want to come together and solve our problems. Our lives don't have to end, but our life styles must change dramatically. Running away and hiding will not save the runners. And their abandonment of the problem will not help us.
I don't believe that running is useless. Running as individuals is useless, partly running as groups looks like a valid survival mechanism to me.
My point about running is in response to the suggestion by others to invite survivalists to join our effort to build Sustainable CommUnity (SusCom)."
I am well aware of the "survival" meme, I was attracted to it myself in the 1970's even bought some guns and ammo. It is not based on working together. It is based on running away and escaping. This is a mindset I want to avoid at SusCom. Now if a well organized group-team-unit of SusCom wanted to mobilize and move to a remote area on the earth. That might serve the needs of community as both insurance and for redundancy.
My reasoning on this has not changed, some few need to stay and make an intellectual stand, open the door and shield those passing through it. To think that the mass of humanity is going to change and give up their monetary and political power looks like a dream to me.
Their monetary and political power will disappear with the end of easily available fossil fuels. Real wealth is life support. If they can't deliver it, they will have no customers.
The masses and their leaders don't understand well enough what the alternative is, and don't want to understand.
I dislike using the term "masses". It suggests that they are second class and unworthy of rescue. These so called "masses" our our fellow humans. Many are our childhood friends and our own families.
I think the term sleeping humanity is better. And most of our fellow humans are still asleep. As far as they know, the system still works. It isn't that they don't want to know, but rather that they don't understand that they need to know. And those that are beginning to wake up are constantly told by their Government that there is no problem, we will take care of you.Go back to sleep.
And, our leaders know all about this problem. Matthew Simmons is an expert on the Fossil Fuel crisis and he meets with President Bush regularly. The coming Iraqi war is about OIL not weapons of mass destruction. Once it becomes known to our fellow humans that the fossil fuels are disappearing, they will desperately want to know how they are going to survive without jobs and money. Big Government and Big Business will have no answers for them. That is why Big Government and Big Business are silent on the fossil fuel crisis. They want our fellow humans to remain asleep.
