Nuclear waste decision provokes storm of protest. The US president's decision to turn a mountain in Nevada into a vast radioactive waste dump receives heavy criticism. [New Scientist]
It is impossible to get away from this story locally (I live in Las Vegas, NV-100 miles/160 km away). I worked on the archaeological aspect of this project. This outcome seemed inevitable 11 years ago when I became acquainted with the background research. The project's fast-tracking by this Imperial Presidency and the summary dismissal of the GAO's recommendations released last month are but a few of the problems. It would seem to be another accelerated redirection of public funds to the coffers of large corporations by this administration. The larger question that remains is what to do with this stuff?

Sleeping Less Than 8 Hours A Night Cuts Death Rate. [UniSci]
"Individuals who sleep 8 hours or more, or less than 4 hours a night, were shown to have a significantly increased death rate compared to those who averaged 6 to 7 hours." This is the only thing I've ever heard that makes me feel remotely positive about chronic insomnia. The article also mentions that when patients complained about insomnia, it was usually depression. That shoe is a little too familiar to this foot.
