I have to say that I agree with Pat D.'s comments on the subject: "...Manila had to be "tweaked" to do all the things I had it doing. Hmm - that's right. But then again, everything I do in a classroom has to be "tweaked."" Everyone's going to want to use the tool in a different way, according to their pedagogical goals, etc. People are always going to pick and choose amongst the feature set that a tool offers. Does the perfect tool exist, and is it worth spending the programming time and dollars to build your own? [[alterego]]

>> Yes, this is an important question. In my opinion too many people tend to wait and whish for the "perfect tool" to show up. Instead of working with the affordable and available resources they excuse their lack of action with the unsufficient state of development in a certain area. Surprisingly, I have met some tech people and programmers with this attitude. These people would lament forever on the weaknesses and missing features of certain products but would never get around to start projects that actually help to solve educational problems or really improve current praxis! Don't get me wrong here... I think it is very helpful to compare blogware, think about missing features, come up with whish lists, and so forth. But like Pat Delaney, I believe that a lot can already be done with the available packages. What is missing are the "translators" the folks that understand enough of the technology and its limits AND education. These people might not do cutting edge software development, but without them we won't see too many successful applications of dynamic Web-publishing for educational purposes.

Blogware has grown from its simple origins to an increasingly powerful content management solution. As first, weblogs just supported basic features: time stamps for each weblog post, automatic archiving of old posts, automated header dates for the posts on a given day, permalinks that automatically gave its entry its own unique URL. But in the past two years, there have been incredible advances in blogware functionality...

My own experience returning from a week of vacation really illustrates the benefits it has had within our own team. The first thing I did yesterday was fire up our team klog and read what had been going on while I was out last week. I immediately saw a couple items that needed my attention (which I dealt with in a few minutes each) and got up to speed on what the rest of the team had been focusing. All before I had finished my first cup of coffee and long before I had made it through my backlog of 200 e-mails and a few voice mail messages.
