TIME and PRIORITIES: Even though I've been retired for a few years, life continues at a fast pace. Allocating hours and available energy continues to be a challenge, however family comes first, in particular time with our nine (almost ten) grandchildren.
DIABETES: My wife and I (Grandma and Potpa) just spent a special "Pump It Up" weekend with our granddaughter (almost 10) at the Barton Center for Diabetic Education in Oxford, MA. Theire web site is: “www.bartoncenter.org”. She has had Type One Diabetes for some years and started wearing an insulin pump about four months ago. Our goal was to learn in depth how the pump system operates, which we needed to know before she could visit us alone or travel with us out of state. There were over 10 children with Diabetes in attendance plus parents and relatives. My compliments to the staff and counselors for an excellent program which included most of the non Diabetic relatives attaching and wearing an insulin pump (with saline solution) overnight. It made us really appreciate what our granddaughter has to live with every day. The pump provides insulin during the day per the Basal Rate program through the flexible tubing to the implanted tube under the skin. Also, at any time during the day, in particular at mealtime, additional insulin units, called Bolus, can easily be added. The pump is much more effective at keeping the blood sugar level within limits than insulin injections.
