Technology Whinge
I've been using Microsoft Word and Excel this morning. I have a list of program short names and their associated descriptions in my Excel worksheet. I want to copy this list and put it in a table in my Microsoft Word document. So I go to Excel, select nine rows, each of two columns, and press Ctrl-C. I switch to my Word document, where I have a table in the correct place with nine rows, each of two columns. Can I paste my short names and descriptions into this table? Can I bugger.
If I just position the cursor in the top left cell of the Word table and press Ctrl-V I get my Excel data pasted as a nested table. If I select the entire table and press Ctrl-V my nine rows are pasted before the empty nine rows in a wildly inappropriate format. I wasted a good five minutes trying to get Word to do what I wanted before I just gave up and re-typed the information into Word.
This is why people complain and say that software doesn't work. I think we can say that Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word work. But in this one situation there is now way to get them to do what I want. Therefore they dont solve my problem.
The moral of the story (and one which 90% of the techies I work with choose to ignore all of the time) is that it doesn't matter how whizz bang and sexy a piece of technology is if it doesn't solve your problems.
