Interesting
This article at the Sydney Morning Herald peeked my interest this morning. It is saying that the job market here down under is booming. Which contrasts rather sharply with what I am hearing from friends and colleagues. The technology job market is close to an all time low.
People who were around in 1991 are comparing the current situation with that very dark period for technologists. What jobs there are in the market (and there are precious few) are offering significantly less money and asking for significantly more skills than they were even six months ago. The difference with IT workers though is that they don't appear in the unemployment statistics. Since last September, I know of at least six friends who have been looking for jobs. Only one has so far managed to secure employment but not one of them will have appeared in the unemployment statistics as they are all ineligible for unemployment benefit, usually because they have earnt too much in the (tax) year to date.
It makes me wonder if there is a hidden army of unemployed white collar workers that contradict this story and contribute to the gloomy global outlook. Of course, it could all be a government conspiracy aimed at IT professionals, perhaps even payback for the dot com debacle.
