Camping with Paper Towels
Dean Goodmanson, the Square Rutabaga guy, mentioned
my brief list of
tips and tricks
(I really ought to put it onto its own page).
In particular,
Car camping tip #1: Carefully open the plastic outer covering of a roll of paper towels, only on the middle of the end. Then remove the center cardboard tube without wrecking the handy water-resistant plastic covering. Once you have the tube out, you can pull paper towels out from the center, one at a time (like a kleenex box), and the roll remains relatively dry even in wet weather.
Dean added:
Camping #1: With a wrench, I ended up tearing the ends of the cardboard tube in my cheap-o-brand paper towels. :-/
For me, cheap-o brands usually work better.
The more plush the towels, the more glue they seem to
like to use to glue it to the cardboard tube in the center.
The ones that work best for me are the recycled ones,
named "Green Something-or-other". When they are being too
difficult to remove, I will sometimes use a long sharp knife
or pair of scissors to cut the cardboard tube in place.
Yes, it takes a bit of time to get the technique down,
but hey: when you're out there camping, time is usually
one thing you have available.
