I have too much water today. I know some communities were harder hit (Dubuque, IA had about eight inches last night), but here in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago we had more than five inches of water - most of it consolidated in just a few hours of heavy rainfall. Watching the water creep up the sides of a sump pit as the pump labors away in a slowly losing effort is one of those things that can tie knots in your stomach. "Should I move the servers out of the basement, assuming it will eventually flood?". "Should I go buy another pump?" "Why does it look like the Des Plaines river, 12 miles to the east, is now flowing into my sump pit?" I hauled the servers upstairs just in case. I also drove down to the city where, there is a Home Depot open 24 hours, to buy a an extra utility pump and a battery back-up, just in case I lose power. |
I control you therefore I exist [Ernie the Attorney] Ernie hits one deep in this analysis of the psychology of sharing versus control on the Internet. Nice job Ernie - this is well written. |
