Interesting; Josh Marshall's Talking Points memo points to a speech Bush gave in Oct. 2000 while campaigning in Pittsburgh. He uses the word "responsible" or "responsibility" twenty four times in the speech: individual responsibility, local responsibility, community responsibility. He refers to his own level of responsibility" to show how qualified he is to be president. "Responsible leaders do not -- responsible leaders confront problems. They don't pass them along to others."

Corporate scandals creep closer and closer to Bush

Paul Krugman wrote in yesterday's New York Times:
But long before that ruling [~] though only a few weeks before bad news that could not be concealed caused Harken's shares to tumble [~] Mr. Bush sold off two-thirds of his stake, for $848,000. Just for the record, that's about four times bigger than the sale that has Martha Stewart in hot water. Oddly, though the law requires prompt disclosure of insider sales, he neglected to inform the S.E.C. about this transaction until 34 weeks had passed. An internal S.E.C. memorandum concluded that he had broken the law, but no charges were filed. This, everyone insists, had nothing to do with the fact that his father was president.
In an AP story today (via WP),
The SEC eventually closed its investigation of Bush without taking action against him, although The Dallas Morning News has quoted a 1993 letter from the SEC to Bush's lawyer emphasizing that its decision "must in no way be construed as indicating that (Bush) has been exonerated."
As Josh Marshall says, "This has legs." Meanwhile, my Merrill Lynch rep hasn't called for a while... he used to ask why I wasn't putting any money into my retirement accounts. I've made about as much in my savings account in the past year as I've lost in my market accounts. I wonder what the Republican leadership will say regarding these most blatant and high-profile failures of the unregulated market to build wealth for anyone but the most devious and powerful. Good news is, they don't have to say anything as long as they can convince most people that the War on Terror is the most important issue.
