In addition to push-to-talk, the Nextel Motorola phones run Java applications. There are Java clients for PeopleSoft, and Siebel CRM apps run over Nextel's iDEN wireless network, according to Ernie Cormier, vice president of business solutions at Nextel.

802.11 Planet Day 1. Microsoft's Jawad Khaki (Corporate Vice President, Windows Networking and Communications Technologies, Microsoft Corporation) delivered a keynote here at 802.11 Planet in Boston in which he showed a number of current uses, but then had several of his team demonstrate pervasive collaborative computing performing voice over IP over wireless, streaming multiple high-definition video streams, and playing Xbox games. None of it is per-se cutting edge, but it was all simple interface, it worked, and had consumer interests at heart.

Alan Reiter, a wireless expert, has a correction to the Tenzig inflight wireless stories that ran earlier this week.  It shows how little fact checking goes on in most publications and the damage a bad press release can do.  Despite the revisions to the pricing structure ferreted out by Alan, I still think it won't work, here's why:

  1. You are forced to log (and remember your log-in info) into your account via a proprietary browser.
  2. Your e-mail is cached on their servers.
  3. It is 9,600 baud.
