@ Media Week: Interview: Ken Lowe, CEO, Scripps. : If memory serves, the first time I interviewed Ken Lowe was an assignment from Multichannel News to write about the cable nets with the largest rating gains one year; all were starting from such a small rating that a .2 uptick could be worth 200 percent. His presentation at USB reminded me of that story; just replace internet for nascent cable nets. We spoke about the role online is playing in the bottom line of companies like Scripps -- not a heck of a lot yet but moving up -- and several other topics in a brief interview. @ Media Week: Bodenheimer: ESPN's Multi-Platform Strategy Is Paying Off In Sales and Deals. : ESPN's push to sell itself to advertisers as a multi-platform company is paying off, George Bodenheimer, president of ESPN and ABC Sports, told the UBS lunch crowd. Fifty percent of the deals for $2 million or more -- some 150 deals -- were for TV plus one other platform; after the lunch, he said online was the number-one non-TV platform. Bodenheimer said ESPN Mobile Publishing even took in $1.2 million in upfront. At the same time, ESPN, which has long been aggressive about including multiple platforms in its rights deals, has become even more so. "We're not just in the TV business any more. We're no longer walking in as a cable network. We're going in as a sports multimedia company," he stressed. One example was the recent MLB deal, which Bodenheimer called "the most wide-ranging set of rights from any sports league." The overarching message: "Any pipe, any device." To that end, when ESPN looks at deals now, it's looking for ways beyond live game video and radio coverage to feed all the platforms: real-time data, library footage, studio shows, games, fantasy games, etc. -- Broadband network ESPN 360 is available through 11 ISPs now. Referring to the recent deal with Verizon that includes a separate fee for broadband, he said, "I do believe we're the only major media company able to distribute its broadband product and obtain fees." -- Bodenheimer brandished his own Mobile ESPN "palm-size sports communication device" as it was dubbed in the promo video he showed: "I can tell you that the phone actually works so we're off to a good start." He's been using it for about three weeks. For ESPN, the slick, $399-after-rebate handset, which will be joined at some point by less pricey options, and the Mobile ESPN service fulfill the Disney division's mission to have a "fully branded ESPN service at every touch point." Fully integrated marketing with ESPN.com began today working toward the official Super Bowl launch. -- Re FCC Chairman Kevin Martin's suggestion that a la carte is an option, Bodenheimer said he doesn't "see too much momentum behind the move to an al carte distribution." -- Bodenheimer said ESPN is looking at mobile video downloads via the iPod or other services but nothing is in the works. When I asked him if he thought Disney had set some kind of precedent by pricing "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" at $1.99 a download, he said they haven't even gotten that far. For now, they're looking at what kind of content might work as mobile VOD. One gauge is what's already successful on VOD -- bloopers and boxing, for instance -- but he said they're aware that not everything that works on TV VOD will translate to mobile. Some people jumped on his initial comments during lunch as a sign that a deal is imminent; sounds like that's far from the case. ( ![]() 1:39:15 PM ![]() |

Iger On Disney's iPod Deal and M&As. : WSJ has an interview with Disney CEO Bob Iger, on how his company did the deal with Apple for the video downloads to iPod, and other issues. On why they did the deal: "Firstly, we'll learn more about consumer behavior and using new technology in a new window with different pricing. Secondly, I really wanted to use it as a catalyst to get the company thinking more about breaking with tradition and following the consumer. Interestingly enough, nothing has done more to reignite the company than this deal. It almost has created more value for the company than the deal itself." On doing any major M&A, he says: :"I think the world is looking at the pace of strategic change and deal making. It would be wrong to give in to that, but I definitely feel it." Richard Branson’s Four-Play Move. Given all the recent activity in the US around the concept of four-play (a combination of voice, video, data and wireless) services, it was only a matter of time before other countries jumped into the fray. The Telegraph reports that Richard Branson will merge his Virgin Mobile MVNO with NTL, a major cable service provider in the UK. Branson, who owns 72% of Virgin Mobile will hold 14% of the combined company. The new company will be called what else, Virgin. (Virgin and four play in one sentence… priceless, for everything else…. there is Master Card!)
The new Virgin will have 2.5 million broadband customers, 4.3 million fixed line phone customers, and will have revenues of close to $7 billion. The deal is predicated on NTL closing $5 billion merger with Telewest. It is ironic that the talks were held between Simon Duffy, CEO of NTL and Branson, who is not part of Virgin’s management. Even T-Mobile, the carrier that carries Virgin’s mobile traffic was told after a handshake deal was reached. This is not good news for Murdoch family, which has been trying to build its own four-play offering. Murdoch’s Sky recently snapped up EasyNet for $373 million.
One banker said yesterday: “James Murdoch is going to choke on his muesli when he hears about this one. It’s going to be the battle of the brands - Virgin versus Sky.”By nobody@example.com (Om Malik). [Om Malik on Broadband] 12:30:27 PM ![]() |

Custom No. Super Custom Yes.
The photo above from a customer of Bowery Kitchen, Komazawa.
The super-customisation of mobile phones is gaining some traction here in Tokyo. Various shops in Shibuya will adorn your mobile phone (or iPod or digital camera) with rhinestones charging anything from 7,000 yen (50 Euro) for a pre-designed P900i cover to around 50,000 yen (350 Euro) for the full front and back design-to-order bling. Mostly but not exclusively for female clientel - men are starting to order quite gothic designs.
Jewel encrusting services can be found as an annex of some phone shops in popular shopping areas of Tokyo. Now nail shops are extending their offering to include mobile phone customisation - it's possible to order matching nail and phone designs.
(In my mind this is somehow all a logical progression from an analysis of 6447 used mobile phone covers and quick and dirty customisation)
I started out a sceptic but I have to admit some of the funkier pixel-art designs have started to grow on me. [Jan Chipchase - Future Perfect]12:27:03 PM ![]() |

Indian Telecom Regulator TRAI Proposes Introduction Of Digital TV From April 1, 2006. Televisionpoint.com: Indian regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has proposed to introduce digital television from April 1, 2006. With this, television sets are expected to double up as Internet service providers, apart from beaming up to 300 digital channels through the set top box. The TRAI has asked the information and broadcasting ministry to ensure introduction of digital television across the country by 2010, when Commonwealth Games are to be organised in Delhi. To start with, digital television will be introduced in metros from April. But the flipside is consumers will end up paying more. I wouldn't mind if the offerings are good and if it's value for money. "One should expect the cable bill to at least double, if not increase three times, with the introduction of digital channels. Under reporting on part of cable operators benefits consumers as it helps in keeping their monthly cable bill to a payable amount," said Vicky Chaudhary, a south Delhi cable operator. But it is the technology that the ministry is going to recommend, is keeping the industry guessing. According to Chaudhary, there are two technologies available in the market. One is MPeg-II, which will mean increase in the number of channels available in digital mode. From the present 96 channels available, the number can go up to 300 in MPeg-II. The other system is MPeg-IV, which is interactive, and offers Internet-propelled television, Internet connection through television, video on demand facility and interactive television mode. WAMO: Mobile Music Downloads Adding Video Content. ![]() Warner Music Japan and KDDI Corp. have announced an agreement which will allow access to what is billed as the world's first mobile music bundle: a package of audio, video, graphic and text content in a single, downloadable file. The service is available on au's CDMA 1X WIN network and launched on 1 December with Sean Paul's Za Trinity album. The partners' press announcement [in Japanese] indicates a steady flow of new material in the pipeline for 2006. The music bundles are available on Warner Mobile - also known as 'WAMO' - which aims to allow club members to gain earlier-than-anywhere-else access to the label's releases, artist interviews and live event schedules.
The downloadable 'WAMO Packs' include a variety of mobile music products such as videotones, mastertones and Flash screensavers and menus as part of a single download with the intention of letting customers customize their cell phone with their favorite artist. WAMO Packs also contain bonus material, such as video commentary from the artists, detailed information about the artists and their music, photos, cover art and links to web sites for additional information online.

Mapping the Mobile Consumer Mind. JCN, 5 December 2005 Marketing initiatives targeting the mobile consumer must integrate communications and content in order to have the greatest impact, according to a study published this week by researchers at the International University of Japan. Based on the results of 30 in-depth interviews of mobile users in Japan and Indonesia, this research effort developed clearly defined "mental maps" which explain the ebb and flow of consumer perceptions of the mobile Internet. In fact, results show very few culturally specific differences between Japanese and Indonesian respondents, suggesting instead that international differences in usage of advanced mobile data are due to infrastructure differences and the overall structure of a country or region's mobile value chain.
