National Western Centennial

The National Western Stock Show, Rodeo and Horse Show is celebrating 100 years of operation. Congratulations y'all.

A century ago Grandmother Gulch was a 21 year-old living here in Denver. I'm pretty sure that she lived around 16th and Boulder in those days. She used to speak of a small orchard. You can't get the farm out of some people and those were her roots.

I'll be she got all gussied up for the show. She was never a big fan of rodeos although she made sure that we had the chance to experience them when we were growing up.

During Coyote Gulch's twelfth summer we got a job selling concessions at the Coliseum and Auditorium. It was great dough. The Stock Show was a big deal every year. We sold mostly sugar so customers were plentiful.

Our boss used to hustle pool that week at the bar that was kitty-corner from the coliseum. Sort of like skinnin' the bumpkins.
