NSA Wiretaps illegal?
Bull Moose: "Some context is desperately in order. Lest we forget, less than five years ago, Al Qaeda slaughtered thousands of Americans on our own soil. We then monitored the communications of those individuals who were contacted by Al Qaeda. And the problem is? In the fevered imagination of Bush haters this was the equivalent of Watergate or Teapot Dome, but the Moose is not persuaded."
USA Today: "Americans are paying close attention to the lobbying scandal in the Capitol and say corruption in government will play a big role in their vote for Congress in November - more important than Social Security, taxes, abortion or immigration." Thanks to Political Wire for the link.

Alito hearing transcript
beSpacific: "Transcript of Senate Judiciary Committee hearing for confirmation of Samuel Alito."
TalkLeft: "Law Prof Geoffrey Stone at Huffington Post writes that 14 constitutional scholars and former government officials have written a letter to Congress detailing the reasons that Bush's warrantless electronic surveillance program violates the law."
Josh Marshall: "Remember, Tom DeLay is still out telling everyone that the only thing that brought him down was a meritless indictment from a partisan Democrat. Today, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals denied his request to have that supposedly meritless indictment tossed out.
"The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals is made up of nine judges. Each one elected. Each one a Republican."
Western Democrat: "Much like Governor Brian Schweitzer in Montana (though I'd argue Schweitzer had the more difficult task), Bill Richardson has proven his ability to get elected in a swing state. And with swing states making all the difference in recent presidential elections, Richardson appears more electable, in this regard, than some of the other potential Democratic nominees. A December 20, 2005 Survey USA poll shows Governor Richardson enjoying 64% approval versus only 33% disapproval. Those numbers rank right up there with Schweitzer who is among the most popular governors in the nation."

Return to drought?
Memories of the recent drought are being re-kindled in Southern Colorado. Here's a report from the Durango Herald. They write, "State climatologist Roger Pielke said it is a classic La Niña pattern, though he said too much of the current balmy weather - upper 60s in Denver - shouldn't be attributed to cooling in the eastern Pacific. He said the south is facing conditions comparable to the drought of 2002. The snowpack in the Rio Grande Basin was 35 percent of the 30-year average, the San Miguel-Dolores-Animas and San Juan only 50 percent. The statewide average, driven by snows in the north, was 107 percent of average.
"Snowfall has been below average along the urban Front Range even while it was snowing in the mountains. Denver got only 0.35 inches, about half the normal, in December. In November 0.48, also about half. Because they get most of their water from the mountains there is no threat - yet."
