2004 Presidential Election
Taegan Goddard: "President Bush's approval rating 'dropped to the lowest of his presidency... after a week of revelations about abuse of Iraqi prisoners and questions about whether Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld should keep his job,' according to a new USA Today/CNN/Gallup Poll. Just 46% of Americans now approve of Bush's job performance. The only good news for Bush is that his decline 'did not produce new support' for Sen. John Kerry. 'In a hypothetical matchup among likely voters, Kerry fell 2 points since last week -- from 49% to 47% -- and remained in a dead heat with Bush, who was steady at 48%.'"
Also, "According to an Associated Press review of recent polls, President Bush and Sen. John Kerry 'are virtually tied in their race for state electoral votes as a crush of political problems has prevented either candidate from breaking open the contest.'"
The Economist: "Welcome to Ohio-and the heart of the election battle." Ohio is one of the battleground states.
Update: John Zogby: "In that same poll, Kerry leads by 17 points in the Blue States that voted for Al Gore in 2000, while Bush leads by only 10 points in the Red States that he won four years ago." All I have to say it that Howard Dean was leading in the polls prior to Iowa. Thanks to Matthew Gross for the link.
