Should the Democrats look more to the West? The Western Democrat writes, "Over at the Distance Blog - comin' at ya from Georgia - blogger Stockton is espousing a '35 State Strategy' (as opposed to the Dean-led '50 State Strategy'). Basically, he argues - give up on the South."

Juan Cole: "The Iraqi parliament voted to amend the interim constitution to allow the permanent constitution to be presented for a vote on August 22 rather than Aug. 15. That gives negotiators one more week to work out a deal."

Political Wire: "Black Republicans 'are forming a national organization to recruit and register black voters that will be in step with the strategy of' RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman, the Washington Times reports. The National Black Republican Association will announce its formation today, 'as well as the creation of its fundraising arm and the opening of its national headquarters' in Washington, D.C."

Helena Independent Record: "Gov. Brian Schweitzer has asked Democrat Bob Rowe, the former chairman of state Public Service Commission, not to work on the governor's upcoming energy conference because Rowe is associated with a lobbying firm that represents several energy companies. The governor's office had previously hired Rowe to help organize the conference. Rowe has been released from that job. 'It's simply policy,' Schweitzer said. 'I believe passionately that you can only serve one master. When we have chosen people to work for us, we have chosen people who will commit themselves to working for all the people of Montana, not a special interest.'"

Thanks to the Daily Kos for the link.

Oval Office 2008: "My thanks again to the Wesley Clark supporter who commented on an earlier blog entry, correcting my belief that the retired general had been relatively inactive on the campaigning front. The reality appears to be somewhat different, despite the low mainstream media profile."

Oval Office 2008: "We've already seen one bit of local spin on the recent CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll on presidential hopefuls - it came from The Tennesseean, and it suggested that Republican Senator Bill Frist should not be unduly concerned about appearing mid-table in the list of GOP hopefuls. The Indianapolis Star has a similar message for lcoal Democratic Senator Evan Bayh."
