Iraq the Model: "Yesterday Maliki went to visit Sistani to discuss the latest security and political developments with him. It's the kind of a move that reflects the government's persistence to let clerics make the political decisions for the country. As if they haven't done enough harm so far! Instead of reaching out to his partners in the political process from other groups he goes in the exact opposite direction and I really don't know what he thought such visit could do to improve his position, especially at a time when he's in desperate need to mend the rift in his cabinet."
A while back Doc Searls got us all wondering if Riverbend was OK since no one had heard from her (via her blog) since April. Today she writes that she and her family landed in Syria. Read the whole post.

NYT: "Three of the major Democratic presidential candidates on Saturday pledged not to campaign in Florida, Michigan and other states trying to leapfrog the 2008 primary calendar, a move that solidified the importance of the opening contests of Iowa and New Hampshire. Hours after Senator Barack Obama of Illinois and former Senator John Edwards of North Carolina agreed to sign a loyalty pledge put forward by party officials in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York followed suit. The decision seemed to dash any hopes of Mrs. Clinton relying on a strong showing in Florida as a springboard to the nomination."

Daily Kos: "...the FEC has unanimously determined that DailyKos qualifies as a media entity under federal law, and thus none of the site's expenditures count under federal law for determining whether a political committee was formed. Just like a newspaper isn't charged with making a campaign contribution by editorializing on behalf of a candidate, neither is this site."

unbossed: "Yesterday's news included the release of GAO's assessment of progress in Iraq. Here are a link to the report, and its summary and recommendations, plus a link to the classified report order form. Securing, Stabilizing, and Rebuilding Iraq - Iraqi Government Has Not Met Most Legislative, Security, and Economic Benchmarks GAO-07-1220T - Statement of David M. Walker Comptroller General of the United States (Sept. 4, 2007) [pdf]"
Juan Cole: "David Walker of the Government Accountability Office is a clear-sighted and brave man. His congressional testimony, that Iraqi security forces are unlikely to be able to hold the neighborhoods being cleared of guerrillas by US troops, has drawn howls of outrage from US officers in Iraq. The GAO sees little progress toward the accomplishment of Congressional benchmarks, including ridding government security forces of militiamen."
