Captain's Quarters: "The Pakistani Army attacked Islamist bases in Waziristan yesterday after one of their checkpoints came under fire. When the dust had settled, 58 combatants had died, and Musharraf may have sent a message about his post-election plans."

SLV Dweller: "A raid by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on a San Luis Valley potato processing plant in April sent Latinos fleeing, according to Flora Archuleta, executive director of the Immigrant Resource Center. Ronny Escheman, owner of a nearby potato processing facility that his family started in 1953, said he could only fill 80 percent of his job openings this year."

McClatchy: "A few months ago, no American would have been foolish enough to do what I had just done: drive from Baghdad west through Iraq's Anbar province, long the hotbed of the country's Sunni Muslim insurgency, and into Jordan. The route was notorious for hijackings, kidnappings and roadside bombs, and passed some of the best-known symbols of the country's mayhem: Abu Ghraib, Hamdaniyah, Fallujah, Ramadi and beyond. But western Iraq has changed, and the drive last Sunday was proof of that. Not once in the seven hours that it took to travel the 360 miles or so was there a threatening moment. The concrete barriers that used to block traffic along the road at al Haswa and then later at al Rutba -- so insurgents and bandits could assault cars more easily -- had been shoved into the median. Traffic flowed quickly and smoothly."

You have to love the Internet. From Oliver Willis, "Until Media Matters came along, especially in the world of mostly conservative talk radio, there was no scrutiny and they could just let it all hang out. What O'Reilly could self-censor on an hour long tv show, tends to come out on his radio show. Before 2004, nobody besides dittoheads were listening to all three hours of Limbaugh. The secret of Media Matters: quoting people's own actual words that they used."

Andrew Sullivan: "I am often accused of hysteria by the Bush-blogs on the question of torture. I hope they will read this moving account of a recent attempt to organize reunions of those in the Greatest Generation who were ordered in World War II to interrogate Nazi prisoners of war for vital intelligence. They wil not mention it, because the only defense now viable for what we have discovered is silence. As befitting their generation, the World War II interrogators kept their word and divulged nothing for decades about what they did or did not do to get information from their captives. But their silence is being broken in outrage at what the Bush-Cheney administration has done to American honor in its adoption of torture as a central plank of government policy."

Captain's Quarters:, "We seem to have people who still misunderstand the primary system, both in our CapQ community and in the national political movements on the Right. Over the last couple of weeks, we have had grand ultimatums from a couple of factions which have demanded a particular type of nominee, or else the faction leaders claim they will depart the Republican Party. A few commenters have asserted the same ultimatum in the comments on this blog. It shows a lack of understanding not just of the primary process but also in how to build the necessary political coalitions that result in agendas getting addressed."
