Same-sex unions are the subject of this article from the Rocky Mountain News. They write, "Come November, Coloradans could face the prospect of voting on two ballot initiatives that, although dissimilar in intent and scope, both orbit around the issue of marriage and couples' rights.
"The Colorado Marriage Amendment would restrict legal marriage to heterosexuals; the Colorado Domestic Partnership Act would provide numerous rights to domestic partners of any sexual stripe.
"There is no group of people more interested in the outcome of both measures than same-sex couples, many of whom feel that they have long been denied access to the same rights and responsibilities of heterosexual couples. But this is not to say that they have been utterly denied recognition.
"In 1996 and 2000, respectively, Boulder and Denver began allowing same-sex couples to register their unions. Neither registry has any legal teeth to speak of, although the certificates provided by each have been useful documentation in qualifying for a partner's health insurance."
