Denver November 2004 Election
One of the weblogs that the newly elected represntative Chandler (D-KY) advertised on was Talking Points Memo written by Josh Marshall. Marshall thinks that Democrats have the edge in Internet fundraising. Collecting money through weblogs was pioneered by a candidate in North Carolina in 2002, Tara Sue Grubb.
OK you candidates buy your Internet ads now. Coyote Gulch does not accept paid advertising but TalkLeft does. TalkLeft has a wide readership as does Talking Points Memo. Chandler adverstised on both weblogs.
John Caldara, of Golden's Independence Institute, is planning on submitting proposals for the November election ballot, in an attempt to help fix Colorado's budget woes. Here's an article about his efforts from the Rocky Mountain News [February 19, 2004, "Caldara offers budget plans"]. From the article, "Unlike some other groups that want to attack the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights, which gives voters the final say in tax increases and limits government spending, Caldara is focusing on Amendment 23. Amendment 23 requires the state to increase funding for K-through-12 education by a formula of inflation plus 1 percent each year for 10 years. Budget writers have warned that a mix of constitutional restrictions and an economic downturn the past two years is forcing Colorado into a $450 million deficit over the next three years. Caldara noted other potential ballot proposals advanced by such groups as the Bell Policy Center and the Bighorn Center for Public Policy have focused largely on TABOR. 'They want to deflect attention from Amendment 23 and try to destroy the nation's best tax and expenditure limitation,' Caldara said. Caldara said he was offering four proposals because one or more might be rejected in the title setting process. One of his proposals would eliminate Amendment 23 outright. Another would strike the 1 percent increase that is mandated annually on top of inflation and student growth. A third would give the legislature discretion on school funding increases in low-money years, and the fourth would authorize the governor to transfer money from the state education fund that was created under Amendment 23."
