Oops!

According to Carolyn G. Heilbrun, Katherine Anne Porter (American writer, probably most well known for the short story "Flowering Judas" and the novel, Ship of Fools) once said: "It is my firm belief that all our lives we are preparing to be somebody or something, even if we do not do it consciously."  12:35:55 PM      comment

Emerging (briefly) From the Pile

Gee, I've been gone for weeks now and you didn't even miss me? How cruel.

Just some things to remember:

  • Instructions for restoring network connectivity after updating to Mac OS X 10.1.5. (I'm not sure it really worked; anyone else having more problems w/dialup since the update?)
  • The 100 Most Influential Books of the Twentieth Century according to the Boston Public Library.
  • Song now playing.
  • You know you're trying too hard to be a writer and doing everything wrong when...
  • The coolest mp3 gadget of the moment. (And by the way, how cool is Mozilla for making it so slick and simple for me to open that frame in its own window? I'm just sayin...)
  • Turn Your Back on Bush. Do it. You'll feel better in the morning. That is if you live (or can stay out of jail) that long, of course.
  • How many different ways can you spell trouble? At the moment I'd spell it d-e-r-e-g-u-l-a-t-i-o-n, but basically R-e-p-u-b-l-i-c-a-n would also cover it pretty well.
  • This is apparently because more than half the population doesn't live in San Francisco. Maybe that's why I like it.
  • Do you think you live in a democracy? Think again:

It is really only in the light of Watergate that the Bush administration's actions since Sept. 11 make sense. Just as the Reagan administration saw its job as undoing New Deal-descended corporate regulation, so has Bush & Co. systematically exploited the terror attacks to undo Watergate-era reforms reining in the executive branch. Each day's tit-for-tat, blame-the-other-guy leaks from the FBI and CIA make it more and more clear that prior to Sept. 11 neither agency suffered from an inability to spy, wiretap or otherwise collect information. Instead, the administration has shrewdly manipulated public opinion to accomplish something sought by Watergate-era Republicans like Cheney and Rumsfeld ever since: a restoration of the imperial presidency.

Oh, yeah, I already almost forgot about <Ohio State.

  • George W. Bush lies? You've got to be kidding me!
  • Is the music industry turning into the book industry?

Where before you'd be happy only at gold and platinum levels, soon you'll be grateful if you have a release that sells 30,000 or 40,000 units -- that will be your bread and butter. You'll sweat every sale and dollar. Other aspects of the business will also contract -- most of the perks and largesse and extravagance will dry up completely. The glamour, the influence, the youth, the hipness, the hookers, the drugs -- gone. Instead, it will be a low-margin, consolidated, quaintly anachronistic business, catering to an aging clientele, without much impact on an otherwise thriving culture awash in music that only incidentally will come from the music industry.
  • Sports car or SUV?
  • "I am afraid of you now, now that you've left me." --The Cardigans
  • But Damon Wright is no longer afraid; he's a star.
  • From the Blog of a Bookslut, a link to the 1922 review of Ulysses. Edmund Wilson, Jr. called it "in short, perhaps the most faithful X-ray ever taken of the ordinary human consciousness." Um, I guess soo...
  • I know someone who knows David Rees, the genius behind Get Your War On. Brushes with fame...
  • And that's really all for right now. Really.
  • bye.
