I have been seduced into reading Rupert Sheldrake, whose theory of morphogenic fields (shared with Nobel laureate Robert O. Becker) usurps genetic biochemistry as the organizing force behind biological activity. Here is a 2002 interview interview with Rupert Sheldrake from The Anomalist magazine and the Gonzo Science website.
I've got a lot more to learn about this, but it could explain a lot of phenomenon that I have previously believed to be extra-scientific such as differences between the sexes, many health alternatives, personal bonding, tissue regeneration, cellular differentiation and even the manifestation of the mind. Here is Rupert Sheldrake's website where you can find out about his writings, theories and experiments.
