"Patents: Great news from the European Parliament -- the good amendments have been passed and it looks a lot better. James Heald of FFII is quoted as saying 'the directive text as amended by the European Parliament clearly excludes software patents. It hangs together incredibly cohesively.' " [Taint.org]

Michael Doyle, founder and sole employee of Eolas, speaks:

[Doyle says] that he wants only to correct Microsoft's misdeeds and liberate the masses from the oppression of Bill Gates' vast empire. "We, because of this legal victory, will be able to reinstate a whole new area for competitive development in the software industry. The developers and the competing entities out there to Microsoft, I think, will come to find that we are more of a friend than a threat," he said.

We'll see. Seems to me he could be personally happy with oh, say, $521 million from Microsoft, or even $100 million if that's all that's left after the appeal process, and not have a need to go after everyone else in the industry too. Then he really would be able to play the role he wants the world to see him as playing. Most people don't actually fully through with such sentiments, but some do.

I remember reading about this patent a number of years ago. Once in a while I wondered what had come of it. Now I know.
