The wherebouts of the President's ex-wife and her two children is unknown. She spoke against him last december. Didn't manage to convince most people. Where is she? If she is in hiding, From whom? The Red Cross has been asked to locate her...

DVRs get stylish at CeBit

German device maker TerraTec introduced its Lancaster digital video system Thursday at the CeBit trade show in Hannover, Germany. While personal video recorders (PVRs) have been available for a while, this is one of the first systems to look more like consumer electronics than a desktop PC.

[CNET News.com]

Clueless! Not only I want it to look like a PC I want it to be a PC. That way I can edit and export with total freedom. El Gato's EyeTV is a much better idea... So you need a mac for it... Trust me, you'll need a mac anyway.

Organizing with NoteTaker. My bias toward software increasingly goes like this: If it's not blatantly obvious in its user interaction, forget it. Occasionally,... [Dan Gillmor's eJournal]

I fail to understand the fascination with all media containers, but NoteTaker is well done, I admit. This is the sort of thing you'd like if you like this sort of thing...

Beyond the CD: A Bid to Burnish Records' Sheen. Discs with remastered, high-resolution digital sound many times the quality of regular CD's are going to become increasingly prominent in record stores. By Wilson Rothman. [New York Times: Arts]

The idea that quality will win us over to copy protection is such crap. Do you really believe DVDs are not pirated? The only thing half protecting the DVD is the lack of true broadband, but I could convert or duplicate DVDs if I wanted...

I believe this idea comes from the myth that increase sound quality was the ticket for CDs. I don't think it was. It was the whole convenient package: You could jump from song to song or repeat a track effortlessly; it lasted more; required less maintenance. The quality didn't hurt but it alone wouldn't have make it. Proof? You want proof? I'll give you proof. Despite Micro$oft's efforts, Mp3 is still the premier format for music in computers. Lower quality than a CD and lower quality than wmv or acc, both possible with little extra effort. Mp3s. because good enough is good enough.

Message in a bottleneck. Instant Messaging, corporate software vie for workplace [CNET News.com]

How bad is corporate security? A quote from the article...

A couple of years ago, Sprint's information services department was thinking about blocking streams of instant messages that were punching holes in its corporate firewall and causing headaches for PC technicians.

Until some of the telecom giant's top executives intervened.

"A number of execs and upper management were using AOL Instant Messenger. They viewed it as a tool to communicate with peers, board members and to communicate with one another because e-mail was too slow," said Doug Utley, who was on the information services team at the time and is now product manager for Sprint's Web services conferencing unit. "When that started happening, it became more acceptable."

So, the insecurities are still there. Because top executives intervened security wasn't enhanced. It is a stupid, terrible idea to use current IM systems for intra company comunications. Why would you permit your internal communications to pass through external servers? Unless you are very dumb you know this is bad. This is even worse than using email. With email and an internal server things are relatively secure to outside snoops. I would understand if there were no other options for this type of instant communication, but there are. Using weblogs and K-logs you could substitute IM with less interruptions, more security, and permanent archives...

I can see it now... Bold Prediction: In a short time something important will hang in the balance of "I sent you an instant message about it...". No proof, no security, no brains...
