University of Wisconsin - Madison Award Program Promotes the Use of Podcasting. The DoIT Academic Technology group at the University of Wisconson - Madison has come up with a creative way to promote podcasting at the university. They’ve created an award program. The award provides $800 and up to 10 hours of help per instructor. They also offer a complete site explaining podcasting and how to use podcasting in education. There’s no word as to how many awards will be distributed.
The announcement offers some suggestions about how to integrate podcasting into the classroom.
o Provide portable access to course sound files (e.g., bird songs, poetry readings, historical speeches, music)
o Elaborate on concepts raised in class (e.g., interview experts, explain new examples, relevant research findings)
o Answer frequently asked questions with your voice, instead of email
o Give tips on completing assignments or preparing for class activities
o Have students create podcast projects

NASA develops Star Trek glasses for the visually impaired. Paul Mogan once struggled with tasks people with sight often take for granted. Visually impaired since the age of 19, Mogan couldn't read the engineering reference books he needed for his job; they were too heavy to hold up close to his face. And filling out paper forms wasn't easy, because once his magnifying glass was close enough to the paper for him to read it, there usually wasn't room for the pen. [Science Blog -]
