It's no surprise that the spectacular UConn Huskies — still all but ignored by the national media despite steamrolling to a 33-0 record and winning their ninth straight Big East tournament last week — are going to the NCAA women's basketball tournament, where they'll settle for nothing less than 39-0, another national championship, and recognition that the most versatile and unselfish team in women's college ball history is also the best.
But Connecticut sports fans are cheering and cartwheeling for the relatively tiny University of Hartford, too, just guided by third-year head coach Jennifer Rizzotti — irresistible force of UConn's 35-0 national champions in 1995 and pro player for the Houston Comets, New England Blizzard, and now Cleveland Rockers — to the America East championship and the Hawks' first-ever NCAA tourney appearance.
And what of the Nutmeg State's males, you ask? Why, the men's Big East tournament championship went to Connecticut as well, and both the other former national champ Huskies and Central Connecticut State University (the other Blue Devils) are in the NCAA tournament too! Let us hear it for the Land of Steady Habits!
