eWeek, 5/20/04: P&G Aiming for 'Automatic Pilot' with HP Outsourcing

LAS VEGAS—A year after embarking on a $3 billion, 10-year outsourcing deal with Hewlett-Packard, Procter & Gamble is reporting steady progress, although much work has yet to be done.
"The honeymoon is over, and now we have to make the marriage work," Linda Clement-Holmes, director of infrastructure services at Procter & Gamble Co., said during a presentation at Gartner Inc.'s Outsourcing Summit here. "We want to be on automatic pilot," she said, adding it will take another 18 months to get there.

The Wall Street Journal, 5/20/04: IBM's Palmisano Sees Huge Gains In Outsourcing

International Business Machines Corp. sees a huge opportunity in hiring itself out to run corporate human-resources offices, supplies procurement, and other back-office business operations, Chief Executive Samuel J. Palmisano said.
In his annual speech to Wall Street analysts, Mr. Palmisano reiterated the company's goal of growing revenue by percentages in the "high single digits" and earnings per share by "low double-digits."

Utility software vendor Symantec Corp. today announced that it's acquiring antispam vendor Brightmail Inc. in a deal worth about $370 million in cash.
In an announcement made today after the financial markets closed, Cupertino, Calif.-based Symantec said it's buying San Francisco-based Brightmail to complement Symantec's existing gateway-security products in the fight against unsolicited commercial e-mail.

If, as the old fashion saw goes, what separates humans from animals is the ability to accessorize, then it simply won't do to complement a Chanel suit with a humdrum black nylon computer case. "With my computer bag falling off one shoulder, my handbag slipping off the other, a cellphone that was impossible to find and a double latte that begged to be sipped, I realized there must be a better way," she said.
