Stating that some 80 percent of business customers buy wireless devices in retail outlets, RIM Chairman and co-CEO Jim Balsillie said the new provisioning features in BES 4.0 let customers call their IT departments to get activated immediately from the store where they bought the service.
"This takes the manageability down a tremendous amount for the customers," Balsillie said during a speech at RIM's Wireless Enterprise Symposium last week in Chicago.

Open-source software has set its sights on a new target: your office desktop computer.
Having won broad acceptance for use in the corporate back office, open-source software is looking to challenge Microsoft Corp.'s dominance of the desktop PC. The timing -- and the technology -- are right for an assault to begin, proponents say.
But do the challengers have a prayer? For an idea of why they might -- and the obstacles in their way -- consider William Schmitz, business manager of the Wichita, Kan., YMCA. Mr. Schmitz became a fan of the open-source operating system called Linux last winter when he bought a $360 home PC at a Sam's Club warehouse store.

Microsoft's sold-out developer conference, kicking off next week in San Diego, will focus heavily on integration and security tools.
Integration and security will be the watchwords at Microsoft's annual TechEd 2004 show, which will kick off Monday in San Diego.
The Microsoft brass are on tap to talk up the benefits of "integrated innovation" (whether or not they actually use the company's favorite catch phrase). Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Server and Tools Corporate VP Andy Lees are expected to focus in their keynotes on how the growing amount of integration across the Windows Server System (as well as other Microsoft products) will help developers and customers cut costs and improve productivity.
