Gosling alludes to MS as a dictatorship. Its about 3/4 way down in the article. And he is right, MS makes decisions more centrally than the Java based world. Which means that MS is more efficient which in turn makes economic sense. So who will win?

That reminds me. Open Source is wonderful - BUT I don't know any IS Manager or CTO who is willing to go before his superiors or BOD and recommend a tool that doesn't have a "central point of blame" attached with it. There is great value in pointing at Gates and saying "he screwed up". Who do you blame in an open source project?

Web Services: Computerworld has a good analysis of the experience of early adopters. As explained by Adam Bosworth in the W3C position papers below the idea of SOAP is one thing. Simple enough. But SOAP needs an entire workflow tier that manages how messages are sent back and forth and has rules for handling the message traffic.
