Producer's Seminar 2001 The Banff Centre is opening its audio facilities for a seminar focusing on classical music production. It features three prominent figures in the field: producer Martha de Francisco, engineer Jean-Marie Geijsen, and editor Peter Cook. The focus is not only on the core role of the producer, but also on the peripheral areas that are essential to truly successful production: acoustic recording techniques and the principles and practice of classical music editing. The seminar consists of both presentations and hands-on demonstrations with each of the presenters dealing with their respective fields of expertise.
This is what I'll be up to on the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend.

This is what I want! 7k US bucks? Oh. Well, I want one of these about 5% of the price. Seriously though. I've invested in an analogue EOS and lenses so I just want a digital version.

On Slashdot, Philip Zimmerman, the developer of PGP, says that the Washington Post misrepresented him in their article about software used by the terrorists. "This misrepresentation is serious, because it implies that under the duress of terrorism I have changed my principles on the importance of cryptography for protecting privacy and civil liberties in the information age." Two things: it's important to keep our heads about us even in times of chrisis; the media will tell the story it wants to tell.

Dispatches from Afghanistan. Like Vietnam chronicler Michael Herr, Russian journalist Artyom Borovik captured the hallucinatory hell of war -- but these days it's Borovik's account of Afghanistan that seems the most relevant. [Salon.com]
