U.S. foes show sorrow over catastrophe "It is a very sad event," said Ali Jabur Khassem, who ekes out a living reselling canned milk and baby formula originally purchased under Baghdad's U. N.-mandated "oil-for-food" program. "What we hate is the American administration, not these astronauts. For them, we feel respect."

Can Grit Director Jerry Ciccoritti tells RAY CONLOGUE that his latest TV crime thriller, Chasing Cain II: Face, shows 'a portrait of Toronto that has never been seen before'
-- Watching Jerry Ciccoritti's homicide thriller Chasing Cain, which is set in Toronto, is a subversive thrill. We've seen police cars scorching down Toronto's streets before, but they usually have Chicago Police or Denver Sheriff's Dept. painted on the doors. This time it's actually Toronto cops on duty, and Toronto -- bless it -- has finally come out of the closet. Mom, dad -- I'm Toronto. Accept me as I am.  FULL STORY [The Globe and Mail: Arts]

Russell Beattie Notebook 'CNN has turned into "All Crisis. All the Time." As is MSNBC and FoxNews. These channels use the hype they create to bump up viewership and advertising dollars. It's in their best interests to blow up any event into a national disaster. They're no better than Hearst running the fake-picture of The Maine being blown up and starting the Spanish-American war. Actually, in today's nuclear world it's worse. The people in the U.S. are becoming war-mongering, xenophobic psychos because every day they are bombarded with images of war, terrorism and disaster.'
Not only that, they have a leader who plays on the fear his obdient press peddles. This is an excellent rant.

A bad case of DVD rot eats into movie collections - smh.com.au [Daypop Top 40] 'The failures are a combination of corrosion - known as "DVD rot" - and delamination, where the layers of the disc separate. Symptoms of the rot include picture break-up and freezing at a specific place on the disk. The main cause is believed to be poorly designed cases. Delamination shows up as a coffee-like stain that prevents the disc from playing.'

Guardian Unlimited Observer | International | Nasa chiefs 'repeatedly ignored' safety warnings 'In a letter to the White House, Don Nelson, who served with Nasa for 36 years until he retired in 1999, wrote to President George W. Bush warning that his 'intervention' was necessary to 'prevent another catastrophic space shuttle accident'. '
Arrogance?

The Guy in That Canadian Film Sounds Like a Noo Yawka, Eh?. So many New York movies are being made in Canada that David Schaap, a New York transplant, works as a dialect coach helping Canadian actors pass for New Yorkers. [New York Times: Arts] "Canadians have upward inflections at the end of sentences and stress different syllables. You can really hear the difference in words like mobile, resource, adult and contributed. Canadians stress the first syllable, making the word sound longer."
A fascinating article about the differences between how Canucks and Americans speak.

Turning a Digital Database Into Local Radio '"Most Requested" has been on the air for nearly two years, but only recently have people not directly involved in the program become aware of the extent to which technology is allowing Mr. Daly to cozy up to local listeners. Radio experts say the program involves perhaps the most extensive use yet of digital audio processing to offer localized shows from a central location. And members of a major broadcasting union are investigating to determine whether the techniques violate local labor agreements.'

TheStar.com - Marketing a maestro 'As Forrester explains with a shrug: "We'll do whatever we have to do to get Peter's face on camera." Instead of throwing a hissy fit and insisting that he's an artist, not a salesman, Oundjian quips: "Well, you can't be an artiste in an empty hall."'
