CEO Steve Jobs says that Apple is the "only vertically integrated technology company left" -- and it's a formula that obviously works, according to an Independent UK article. When asked why Apple generates a religious-like fervor among its customers, Jobs said the question should be "... why don't the other computer makers inspire the same sort of excitement?" Apple to Webcast 24-hour women's baseball game
Apple will Webcast a 24-hour women's baseball game that's planned as a fundraising event for combatting AIDS in Africa, according to the New York Times. Virginia Tech prepares to deploy Apple supercomputer
Virginia Polytechnic and State University is racing to deploy its new supercomputer cluster based on Apple Computer Inc.'s G5 desktops by Oct. 1 in order to make the next ranking of the Top 500 list. Faculty and students hope to set up the 1,100-node Terascale Computing Facility by the end of this week, said Lynn Nystrom, a Virginia Tech spokeswoman. The university thinks the new cluster will rank among the top 10 fastest supercomputers deployed at academic institutions, and among the fastest overall in the world, she said. [MacCentral]

Apple releases Mac OS X v10.2.8 update
Apple on Monday released an update to Mac OS X to bring it up to version 10.2.8. The new version can be downloaded through the Software Update system preference pane or from Apple's Web site. Apple notes that the Mac OS X v10.2.8 update works only with Power Mac G3 and G4-based desktop and portable computers, including iMac, eMac and iBook. This update is not intended for Power Mac G5 systems. [MacCentral]

Newspapers Try 'Really Simple Syndication'
'The New York Times launched its first RSS in March 2002. "Web logs are an important distribution channel for our high-quality content, and providing RSS feeds generates both traffic and user registrations for nytimes.com," said Christine Mohan, spokeswoman for New York Times Digital. The paper currently offers 19 feeds to bloggers using Radio Userland software.'
