SignOnSanDiego.com -- Mexican daily newspaper changes gears
Founded in 1917, Excelsior was loyal to the Institutional Revolutionary Party, which ruled the country for 71 years.
It later became independent [^] and one of Mexico's most respected dailies. But in 1976, then-President Luis Echeverria organized an internal coup within the newspaper to silence its criticism, and it lost much of its credibility.
