Doctors warn young men: Get the laptop off your lap
[Via GAM-National] So where should men use a laptop? "Use it on a desk," he said, "anywhere but on the lap."
If the findings sound, well, nuts, no doctor is likely to dismiss them. From the front page of yesterday's Globe. I'm past my breeding years so I can only hope it's working on me!

Iraq Civilian Casualties? Who Knew?
Does America prefer its media to ignore deaths caused by U.S. actions?
[Via TIME's Top Stories] Even if that lower total was accurate, it suggests that Iraq has suffered at least five times the impact of 9/11 — and the fact that its population is one tenth that of the U.S. would magnify the impact to more like 50 times that of 9/11.
If the civilian death toll can be routinely dismissed as an unfortunate by-product of war, an even more uncomfortable aspect for the U.S. of the Lancet study is the conclusion that the majority of the violent deaths had been caused not by terror attacks, but by U.S. air strikes. Anyone who's paying attention knew.

Analysis: Will Subscriptions Drown Out iTunes?
It wasn't hard to figure out which company was on the minds of most of the attendees at the Music 2.0 conference in Los Angeles Wednesday. Whether representing record labels or online retailers, speakers at the digital music confab couldn't praise Apple enough for the success enjoyed by the company's iTunes Music Store -- that is, when those same speakers weren't predicting the store would soon tumble from its spot at the head of the online music market.

Terms of Use for CBC RSS feed
I'm snipping bits and pieces from the agreement and pasting them here.
Website Exclusivity. You guarantee that the CBC Feed or Feed Content shall be the exclusive content on your website from a general news and information provider.
What if I want to post 1 out of 50 items from the CBC and also items from The Guardian for example?
Promotion. You shall not make any promotion or advertisement of the CBC Feed or Feed Content, without the written authorization of CBC/Radio-Canada.
Does this mean I can't make this post?
Furthermore, you undertake to display the CBC Feed and Feed Content as they are provided by CBC/Radio-Canada, without altering them in any way, or changing their order of presentation, unless CBC/Radio-Canada expressly indicates you should do so or if you receive the written authorization of CBC/Radio-Canada. You undertake not to combine content from other sources with the CBC Feed and Feed Content. You also undertake to clearly indicate that the CBC Feed and Feed Content has been produced by CBC/Radio-Canada and display a CBC/Radio-Canada copyright notice at all times and under all circumstances. You may not archive the CBC Feed and Feed Content. You will not edit, alter or in any way manipulate the CBC Feed and Feed Content nor shall you allow its reproduction by anyone. You will not distribute the CBC Feed and Feed Content in any way or allow its distribution or redistribution in any manner or form by anyone. Sounds like this blogger can't agree to the terms.

Finally... The CBC Gets the RSS Gospel
Sorry that I've had to keep this one under my hat for so long, but... Now that Dan spotted our new CSS feeds (no surprise that Dan was the first!), I guess the news is out! Introducing the new CBC News RSS Feed Centre. The feeds are updated every 15 minutes. You can, of course, still use the CBC's Headline Service if you want to incorporate the content into your web site. There's even more exciting stuff coming
(which, of course, I can't talk about right now) so stay tuned!
[Via I Love Radio .org] Well I was about to pop the champagne corks but then I took a look at the terms of use. I must be misreading it because it looks as though you can't post anything without simply duplicating their feed and only their feed. Please tell me I'm wrong.

CNN.com - Invasion of the podcasting people?
Podcasting gets its hipster name from the Apple iPod, but it has no direct connection to Apple. You can get podcasts on any player, or just through your computer, if you are set up for it.
The idea was a gleam in the eye of the former 1980s MTV veejay Adam Curry, who worked out the technical details with Dave Winer, a co-creator of RSS, the Web feed syndication system that launched a gazillion blogs. (See my two previous columns on blogs and news feed readers for background)
Curry and Winer fixed blogs to feed audio and video files as well. They first called it audio blogging, until the cool name came along and stuck.

Audio Recorder for OS X
Mark Frauenfelder:
I hate tape recorders and tape recorders hate me. On at least a half-dozen occasions, I've tried to tape an interview for a story I was working on only to discover the recorder didn't capture the conversation. Half the time it's been my fault (not hooking up the cables between the phone and the recorder properly) and half the time the recorder just didn't do its job, as far as I can tell. It's embarrassing when that happens!
A few weeks ago, I discovered Audio Recorder, a freeware program for OS X that records audio input as MP3 files. The interface couldn't be simpler. I've used it three times so far and the results have been flawless. I use it with the $25 RadioShack Wireless Phone Recording Controller, which is also great. I play back the interviews in iTunes and transcribe them in BBEdit. Man, I'm set. Link
