Photo Products of the Year and Reader Awards
Macworld readers are a savvy bunch. You have pretty strong opinions about, well, pretty much everything. (Want proof? Just visit the Macworld.com forums.) So a couple of months ago, we asked the denizens of Macworld.com, "What are your picks for hardware and software products of the year?" After collecting hundreds of nominations, we whittled them down to the favorites and then put the list up for an online vote. When the dust cleared, there were two clear winners for our Readers' Choice Awards.

How to make DVDs of your videotapes with a Mac
Sometimes you have video on VHS videotapes that you want to make digital, either so you can edit or otherwise manipulate it on a PC, or so you can burn it onto a DVD. I realized yesterday that I had all the pieces to be able to do this myself, so I tried it out, using the NFB series The Champions that I'd borrowed from the Provincial Library. What follows is an explanation of how I did it.

The Globe and Mail: Court quashes Ottawa's MP3 fee
Canada's Copyright Act gives the federal board the authority to apply levies on blank media such as compact discs and audio cassettes. But the wording of the act has not kept up with the new technology of MP3 players, represented by the wildly popular iPod, which use an embedded memory rather than discs or cassettes, to store digital copies of songs.
The levy on iPods will likely be removed following this verdict.

The Globe and Mail: Canada refuses to scrap in-flight cellphone ban
Canadian authorities say they will continue to prohibit cellphone calls during flights on this country's carriers, despite moves by the United States to reconsider such a ban.
But Canadians who need to be connected in flight can take heart: There is faint hope that they might be able to surf the Internet wirelessly if Ottawa is convinced it's safe.
Cool. The technical/safety issues with regards to cellphone use may be bogus but I do not like the idea of sitting on a flight full of people gabbing on their cells. The environment is already far to noisy. Wireless access for data is another matter. Of course once you have the data you could always use VOIP but presumably the number of users there would be minimal.

Kids like to listen more than look
David Pescovitz:
Cognitive scientists at Ohio State University report that infants and young kids, unlike adults, are attracted more to sound than visuals in their environment:
(Vladimir) Sloutsky, who is also associate dean of research for the university’s College of Human Ecology, said children probably pay more attention to sounds because of their temporary nature.
“If you don’t pay attention to sounds, they disappear,” he said. “On the other hand, many visual stimuli are stable and stationary. This preference for sounds makes sense in the case of learning language. If infants and young children didn’t favor sounds, it is difficult to explain how they could pick up language.”

New: PDF Adder
Whew! Love the recently discovered PDF feature in iTunes 4.7. In case you didn't know, the special edition U2 box set at the iTMS comes with a PDF ("Digital Booklet") of esoterica which can be accessed via iTunes. Well, us regular folks can make PDFs, too...lyrics, album art, production notes, whatevah. I created PDF Adder to use a selected track's Album and Artist tags to likewise tag a PDF "track". Just select an audio track in iTunes and run the script. It asks you to select a PDF. The PDF is added to iTunes and uses the selected track's Artist and Album tags in the PDF "track" so you can better associate the PDF with a particular Artist and Album.
