Troops Stay in Touch on Intranet
A free collaborative service is an alternative to the military's portal site for sharing photos and family news. A soldier can read bedtime stories to his kids, but it can be scary for folks at home to see what's really going on overseas. By Michelle Delio.

Eliminate Spam from CBC Email Boxes
(Note: While this posting could apply to anyone using Groupwise, it’s mostly meant for people at the CBC.)

[Via I Love Radio .org]
Todd 'says hello' to all the CBC types who have perhaps recently seen his posters around the Broadcast Centre in TO. I have a different solution, though a less helpful one. Get a Mac. Mail's OS X filters are excellent. In fact I'm going to ask the IT people here if they can turn off their SPAM filters for my account. They are blocking legitimate mail and letting through genuine SPAM. I don't mind the SPAM coming through 'cause Mail catches it but missing mail intended for me is a really big drag. It's particularly frustrating since the mail I've caught it blocking is from sources I regularly get mail from and send mail to. What's up with that!>

MarsEdit makes blogging 'like writing e-mail'
Ranchero Software on Friday released MarsEdit 1.0, which the developer says "makes Weblog writing like writing e-mail." You use MarsEdit to compose each post within its own window, complete with the ability to spell-check it, save it as a draft, or even set it aside and open a window for a new post. You can save posts as drafts, create custom templates, employ AppleScript to automate your blogging, send pages from your Web browser to MarsEdit with the bookmarklet function and more.

Mariner intros 'fridge poetry' app Desktop Poet
Minneapolis, Minn.-based Mariner Software on Friday released Desktop Poet, a new application described as "fridge poetry for the desktop of the Macintosh." The software presents you with hundreds of word tiles that you can assemble into sentences or phrases, helping you brainstorm ideas, projects, poems, fiction or other creative endeavors. Individual tiles can include more than one word, and you can click on words to learn their definitions or view synonyms that you can choose from for a replacement. You can also create new tiles as well as adjust preferences that control the tiles' opacity, your choice of "virtual fridge," text font and more. Pricing is US$19.95 and Mac OS X v10.2 is required.
