The Death of Classical Radio?
Though concert music is still a big part of public radio in many
American cities, dozens of stations have dropped or cut back the format,
mostly to air additional news programming, which attracts more listeners and
donors. The decision sounds mercenary to music fans, but the stations say it
provides more public service. News is valued so highly in Washington, D.C., that WETA-FM will erase most classical music from its schedule starting in March, even though it will have to compete with
another D.C. station carrying NPR News schedules compared From current.org
